This is a new episodic collection that focuses on the one and only Gus the Basset Hound. We were blessed with Gus from January 2010 until November 2021.
Gus’ story starts on the weekend after Christmas 2009. A work friend of my wife Lynn was driving in a south Houston neighborhood with his girlfriend when a vehicle in front of them pulled to the side of the road and two young Basset Hound puppies were put out on the side of the road. The other vehicle drives off. Lynn's work friend and his girl friend stopped, picked up the puppies and went home.
They decided to keep the girl Basset Hound and once school starts back up in early January 2010 asked Lynn and Vanessa if they would like the boy Basset Hound. You can guess Lynn's and Vanessa's answer.
Later that week the boy Basset Hound had a new home with us. Vanessa named him Gus after Gus Gus, the mouse in Walt Disney's Cinderella.
It didn't take long for Gus to establish his position in his new home and our hearts. Very quickly Gus learned the backyard was his to roam, that he loved to wolf down his dinner and the stairs to the second floor were not designed for his long run/rise ratio. Let's just say he often hit high center when trying to climb stairs.
Since all three of us worked, we set Gus up with food and water on our screened porch so that he could explore the back yard but still have cover if the weather turned wet.
Not too long after Gus' arrival a cold front blew in and the high for the following Monday was to be near freezing. I didn't like the idea of Gus being outdoors in the cold weather so I took the day off. The following pictures are of Gus in the backyard that day, but don't worry, we weren't outside long and before he got too cold he was back in the house warm and cozy on the couch.
We learned quickly that a Basset Hound, at least this Basset Hound, when tired promptly takes a nap wherever he was. Before long there was a dog bed in most of the rooms in our house so that Gus always had a soft place to sleep if he felt the need to nap.
Next week in episode two: Gus becomes a cat and chases a laser light and even more photos of Gus napping.
Baby Gus! The best boy! 😊♥️
