Welcome to the second episode of Gus Tails where we take a look back at the life of Gus the Basset Hound. Last week in Episode 1 Gus becomes a member of our family and quickly finds his way into our hearts.
You can find a new episode of Gus Tails every week right here. My goal is to publish a new episode every Wednesday, but sometimes I fall a little behind schedule as I did this week.
Look at those ears. Look at that beefy paw. Look at the elegant profile. At first glance, Basset Hounds are about the most serious creatures I've ever seen. They have a sense of elegance and high society, but the personality of a Basset Hound, from my limited experience, is rarely elegant, serious or regal.
When Gus became a part of our family in January 2010 we had only one other animal in the house. Dyna was a feral cat. As a kitten she was waiting by our front door early one pre-dawn morning as I came back from a walk.
Perhaps Dyna had a big influence on Gus because we noticed that when we played laser pointer tag with Dyna Gus wanted to join in. Gus is the only dog I've known who would chase the light of a laser pointer.
Gus would trot across the floor, speed up to catch the light, then when one of us moved the light quickly in another direction, he would slide trying to catchup.
Gus would chase the laser light with bursts of energy, chasing, then pausing, perhaps studying this strange creature that eluded him, then chasing again, determined to capture his prey.
The chase would end when we could see Gus was reaching his limits of endurance and we would turn the laser pointer off.
Gus never lost his laser light addiction.
In this episode we do see Gus grow from January to April. Gus in all of his adult glory weighed about 60 pounds. Next week in Episode 3 Gus and Dyna in the back yard and other Gus Tails.
Dyna in a box, Gus belly, and a great story?! This post has it all! 😊♥️
