Welcome to the ninth episode of Gus Tails where we look back at the life of Gus the Basset Hound. Last week in Episode 8 Gus enjoyed one of his favorite chairs and laid in the shadows on the couch. Who says Basset Hounds are not an energetic breed? Not me.
A few days before Christmas 2011 Gus showed off one of his sweaters. It was challenging to find one that fit Gus’ physique (you know, broad shoulders, powerful hindquarters and a deep chest). Occasionally we would find one that almost fit him.
Two days before Christmas in 2011, Dyna decided she was part of the Christmas decorations.
Having heartily celebrated on Christmas Day, Gus crashed hard on December 26, 2011.
As the Christmas teardown was in full swing Dyna insisted on inspecting our packing of the Christmas decorations.
No matter which direction I went, Dyna kept an eye on me.
The above picture was taken after the first week of January 2012, but both Dyna and Gus were still recovering from “the best New Year’s Eve party ever!”
A few days later Gus was comfortably resting in one of his chairs. See the chew bone on the ground? There’s a story about that chew bone. In between the purple rings would be one or two dog treats in the shape of a washer. This was supposedly one of those treats/toys that is supposed to “keep your pup busy for hours” but Gus in a few minutes would tear the dog treats off the bone, eat the treats, then ask, sometimes demand more.
One Friday evening I was talking with Calvin Jones, a friend from elementary school days. Gus had chewed the dog treats off, consumed the dog treats, picked up the bone walked over to me, dropped the bone onto the bare floor and looked at me. The sound of the bone was rather loud. Calvin asked what the sound was and I explained to him that Gus was telling me he wanted another treat. I added two new treats to the bone. Gus went off and gnawed away, but in a few minutes brought the bone back to me and dropped it on the floor. Calvin asked if Gus had brought the bone back to me. I told him yes and Calvin said “That’s a smart dog. He’s got you well trained.” Yeah, Gus was smart and he did have me well trained.
Next week in Episode 10 of Gus Tails, it is spring of 2012 and Gus is on the move and active. Yeah, well, there are also a few pictures of Gus relentlessly pursuing the goal of the perfect nap.
