Gus Tails - Episode 15
Episode 15 - Gus and his friends, including a friend of his I do not remember, Gus and Louise playing hard.
Welcome to the 15th episode of Gus Tails where we look back at the life of Gus the Basset Hound. In our last episode (Episode 14) we reminisced over several photos of Gus and his friends.
Gus and Dyna taking a well deserved rest. I don’t remember what they were up to on that day, but it is clear that it was exhausting. Gus felt he needed the entire chair to himself and pushed the pillow to the floor.
A young Louise, exhausted from a day of protecting the house, takes a brief rest.
Tiger, an innovative cat, enjoys a brief rest among freshly dried laundry.
Dyna did not appreciate nor enjoy my photo session early one April morning in 2014.
Louise was not happily anticipating her Vet appointment. Don’t worry, all was well, she just needed her annual vaccinations.
At the end of a long day, Gus is ready for a good nap, but is willing to have a few photos taken.
We can all recognize that handsome Gus on the right, but I do not know who the dog on the left is. It looks like our backyard in West Columbia, but none of us can remember who came to visit Gus. Gus was a friendly animal, every creature and every person was his friend.
One day Vanessa was driving from Lake Jackson to West Columbia and saw a Basset Hound on Texas Highway 35. She pulled up next to the Basset Hound, opened her passenger door and the Basset hopped into her car. The Basset had tags, and Vanessa saw the Basset’s name was Bob and there was a telephone number to call if Bob was lost. Vanessa didn’t have a phone with her so she drove home with Bob riding shotgun. Once at our home, Bob hopped out and walked to the front door. Apparently he was used to being picked up on the road by young women.
Vanessa walked in the front door, Bob followed her in with a confident swagger and Gus was elated. Gus ran to Bob, said a quick dog hello, and invited Bob to join him in the backyard. Bob accepted the invitation and Gus ran from corner to corner like a young child when another child visits their home. Gus pointed out all of his toys, all of his hiding spaces, and where he had removed the weed wrap from my flower beds. I imagined in dog language Gus was saying as he ran from cool thing to cool thing “Look at this! And I have one of these and two of these! This is where I watch the birds from…”
While all of this was going on, Vanessa called the number on Bob’s collar and talked to his human. Bob’s human said that Bob had snuck out of the backyard and made his way to the highway. Bob was chipped and could be tracked online. Bob’s human knew something was afoot because Bob went from moving about at his usual leisurely Basset pace to moving west on Texas Highway 35 at 50 miles an hour.
Bob’s human arrived at our house about 30 minutes later. Bob and Gus said their goodbyes after an eventful afternoon of playing hard and exploring in the backyard.
A longish (3+ minutes) of Louise and Gus roughhousing.
A shorter video from the same day. At this point, Gus is ready for his nap, but Louise wants to keep playing. Louise won’t leave him alone so an exhausted Gus jumps back into the fray.
Next week in Episode 16 more photos, videos and tails of Gus and his friends.
