Gus Tails - Episode 27
Everything good I know about naps I learned from Gus. The dog days of summer 2015.
Welcome to the 26th episode of Gus Tails where we look back at the life of Gus the Basset Hound. In our last episode (Episode 26) we looked at late summer and early spring of 2015.
After having a near perfect day Gus had some popcorn and settled in for a late afternoon nap in June of 2015.
Louise is resting up for the fourth of July celebration. This might have been the year when some fools down the street made small paper balloons with a paper lunch bag as the ballon, a folded paper bag as the gondola, and a burning candle that provided the hot air lift for the “balloon.” One of the balloons landed on its side in our yard and soon the paper gondola and balloon caught fire from the still burning candle. No damage was done, but that was the last of the balloon flights that night.
A couple of days later Gus was still recovering from the fourth of July excitement. Luckily, Gus had a talent for winding down.
Occasionally, Gus had to shut out the rest of the world. This was one of those times.
This is a rather important photo. Notice the casual, almost askance arrangement of Gus’ ears.
On very rare occasions Gus would unfurl his ears to their full length.
Two hours later Gus had his ears in a more streamlined position.
And two hours later that same day, Gus has turned in for the evening.
The next day Gus takes a late morning nap with his friend Ali Gator.
Gus often enjoyed resting under a nice, warm blanket.
As the evening settled down, so did Gus.
Sometimes I am a stubborn learner, but more times than not the lesson eventually sinks in. So it is with naps. Over the last few years I’ve slowly realized the value of an afternoon nap. Gus, along with the other animals in my life, kept teaching me and I’m finally learning at the age of 66.
Next week in Episode 28 of Gus Tails even more photos and tails of Gus and his friends in the fall and early winter of 2015.
